The novel was a spy thriller, and because of its interesting story and unique angle it proved popular with readers. The book followed the story of Jason Bourne – an incredibly skilled amnesiac, who becomes the unwitting target of the CIA. In 1980, American author Robert Ludlum published the novel, The Bourne Identity.
